If you're looking for a warm destination in April where you can relax by the sea, eat great food, and avoid the crowds,
Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia should be at the top of your list.

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan your April trip to KK — including the weather, local festivals, food recommendations, best hotels, and even a sample 4-day itinerary based on my own experience.

☀️ April Weather in Kota Kinabalu

  • 🌡 Average temperature: 25–33°C

  • 🌦 Occasional short showers (tropical-style rain)

  • 🌤 Mostly sunny with high humidity

  • 🧴 Essentials: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light clothing

Although it’s the shoulder season between wet and dry periods, April in Kota Kinabalu is usually pleasant and great for outdoor activities.

🎉 Events & Festivals in April

Sabah Fest (Late April – Early May)

A lively cultural festival where you can enjoy traditional dance, music, and local food from different ethnic groups in Sabah.
If you're lucky, you might catch it in late April.

Ramadan Note (2025)

Ramadan in 2025 ends on March 30, so April is outside of the fasting month.
That means:

  • All restaurants and cafes operate normally

  • Markets and nightlife return to regular hours

  • Just check for Eid holiday closures during the first week of April

Visiting Kota Kinabalu in April turned out to be one of my best travel decisions.
There were fewer tourists, great weather, and that perfect balance between rest and adventure.

The sunsets here are truly something else — warm, golden skies reflecting off the sea.
And if you’re staying at a hotel like Pacific Sutera, even your swimming pool looks like a postcard.

  A real traveler’s review of the ferry terminal that connects you to Sabah’s stunning islands If you’re planning a trip to Kota Kinabalu , chances are high that you’ll pass through Jesselton Point — the city’s primary ferry terminal for island hopping. But beyond being just a pier, Jesselton Point holds historical value , logistical importance , and local charm that can either enhance or frustrate your trip, depending on how prepared you are. Here’s my honest take after personally using this terminal for a Sapi Island trip. 📍 Location & How to Get There Jesselton Point is centrally located , just a 5–10 minute walk from Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.
