Why This Lesser-Known Island Was the Highlight of My Trip
During my trip to Kota Kinabalu, I knew I had to do an island tour.
Instead of the usual tourist-packed spots like Sapi or Manukan, I took a chance on Mengalum Island — a name I hadn’t heard before.
Turns out, that was the best decision of my trip.
If you’re looking for clear waters, quiet shores, and untouched beauty, this is your spot.
Hotel pickup around 7:30 AM
30-minute ride to the jetty
About 1 hour by speedboat to Mengalum Island
💡 The boat ride can get a bit bumpy — bring motion sickness pills if needed.
But the view? Absolutely worth it. As we approached, the color of the sea gradually turned from deep blue to emerald green.
I stepped onto the beach and literally stopped in my tracks.
The water was so clear, I could see my own shadow on the seabed.
The sand? Soft and white.
The crowd? Minimal.
The vibe? Like a private island, but for regular people.
Trust me — every direction is Instagram-worthy.
Here are some of the best spots to shoot:
Wooden swing facing the ocean
Beach chairs under shady trees
Walking barefoot on the white sand
Standing on the wooden deck over the sea
That moment your feet disappear into the turquoise water
Included in the tour was a short snorkeling session around a nearby reef.
Life vests and full equipment were provided
About 30 minutes of easy snorkeling
Water wasn’t too deep, so even beginners were fine
I saw dozens of colorful fish and live corals — magical!
The tour included a buffet-style lunch with local food:
Grilled chicken BBQ
Fried noodles & rice
Fresh tropical fruits (watermelon, pineapple)
Iced tea & bottled water
You eat under the shade of trees with the sea breeze around you —
Simple, but surprisingly satisfying.
Bring a towel, change of clothes, waterproof pouch
Sunscreen is essential — the sun is strong
Flip-flops or water shoes are ideal
Most tours cost around RM 400–500 (includes pickup & meals)
Travelers who want a quieter island experience
Couples looking for beautiful backdrops
First-timers wanting safe, beginner-friendly snorkeling
Anyone craving a peaceful day away from crowds
“I didn't expect this island to be the highlight of my trip.
It’s peaceful, photogenic, and feels like a secret gem.”
If you’re in Kota Kinabalu and want a one-day escape to nature,
skip the crowds and head to Mengalum.
