Why This Lesser-Known Island Was the Highlight of My Trip

✈️ The Start of Something Unexpected

During my trip to Kota Kinabalu, I knew I had to do an island tour.
Instead of the usual tourist-packed spots like Sapi or Manukan, I took a chance on Mengalum Island — a name I hadn’t heard before.

Turns out, that was the best decision of my trip.
If you’re looking for clear waters, quiet shores, and untouched beauty, this is your spot.

🚤 Getting There

  • Hotel pickup around 7:30 AM

  • 30-minute ride to the jetty

  • About 1 hour by speedboat to Mengalum Island

💡 The boat ride can get a bit bumpy — bring motion sickness pills if needed.
But the view? Absolutely worth it. As we approached, the color of the sea gradually turned from deep blue to emerald green.

🏝️ First Impressions

I stepped onto the beach and literally stopped in my tracks.
The water was so clear, I could see my own shadow on the seabed.

The sand? Soft and white.
The crowd? Minimal.
The vibe? Like a private island, but for regular people.
