Where silence, sea breeze, and white sand do all the healing
While planning my trip to Kota Kinabalu,
everyone talked about Sapi or Manukan Island — but honestly,
I wanted something quieter. Less crowd, less noise. Just the sound of waves.
That’s how I ended up on Mamutik Island,
and I have to say, it was the perfect half-day retreat.
Arrived at Jesselton Point Jetty around 9 AM
Paid for the park fee + environmental fee
Took a speedboat — just 10 minutes ride to Mamutik
No seasickness, no rush, and the sea was already stunning as we approached.
Mamutik is not a large island, and that’s the charm.
No major resort, no noisy beach clubs — just palm trees, calm tides, and a few other travelers quietly relaxing.
There’s a small hut selling drinks,
but otherwise, you get a sense of peace and simplicity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
You don’t need to swim far.
Just step into the water and you’ll already feel the difference.
The waves are gentle, the depth is manageable, and even near the shore,
you might see little fish swimming around your feet.
If you bring a snorkel or rent one,
there’s a small reef zone where even beginners can enjoy snorkeling safely.
There are no restaurants on Mamutik Island,
so I packed a quick lunch from a nearby 7-Eleven: rice ball, bananas, and iced tea.
Eating under a tree with a sea breeze?
That’s five-star dining in my book.
Standing on the curved beach at sunrise
Sitting barefoot in the sand under the trees
A foot-dip photo in crystal water
Shadow shot while walking the shoreline
Just sitting with the ocean as your background
Less crowd = more photo freedom. It felt like a private island shoot!
Towel & change of clothes
Waterproof pouch for your phone
Flip-flops or water shoes
Sunscreen & hat
Packed snack or simple meal
Drinking water (essential)
Travelers with only a half-day to spare
Solo travelers looking for peace
People who enjoy quiet nature over crowds
Beginners who want an easy snorkel experience
“You don’t always need a famous beach to feel like you’ve traveled far.
Sometimes, all you need is a quiet island, gentle waves, and no notifications.”
Mamutik Island isn’t flashy — it’s just right.
I’d absolutely go back on my next visit to Kota Kinabalu.
